The Thandan people, also known as Tandan or Uraly, are part of the Malayali people cluster within the South Asian Peoples affinity bloc. They primarily speak Malayalam, a Dravidian language widely spoken in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Historically, the Thandan have been associated with traditional occupations and community leadership roles in rural Kerala. Their identity is deeply rooted in regional customs and caste-based social structures.
The Thandan people typically live in rural and semi-urban areas of Kerala. Many are engaged in agriculture, fishing, and small-scale trade. Some have transitioned into modern professions, but a significant portion still relies on traditional livelihoods. Social life is closely tied to family and community networks, and cultural practices such as festivals, music, and dance remain important. Education levels are improving, but disparities still exist in access to higher education and employment opportunities.
Most of the Thandans are Hindu, but they also have a Christian minority. They have churches, a Bible in their language, and disciples. They need spiritual renewal and a willingness to be Christ's ambassadors to Hindus.
They need greater access to quality education, especially in rural areas, to help break cycles of poverty and improve employment prospects. They need economic development initiatives that support sustainable livelihoods and entrepreneurship.
They need culturally sensitive discipleship and Christian teaching, especially for those who have come to faith in Christ.
Pray that the Thandan people will encounter the transformative love of Christ and experience spiritual renewal.
Pray for the small community of Thandan believers to grow in faith and become bold witnesses to the lost throughout India.
Ask God to raise up local leaders and pastors who can disciple others in culturally relevant ways.
Pray for the removal of spiritual barriers and for open hearts among those who have not yet heard the gospel.
